What is Siga Air Tape?
Good morning. This is Bill Freeman with Freeman’s Construction. I want to explain a few products that we are using on this job today. One of the most important things in building a house is energy efficiency, which is impacted by the air flow in and out of the house. One of the weak links on a house is this joint at the bottom where your wall sits on the concrete. Air will move under that plate way more than you could ever imagine.
Siga Tape
SIGA Fentrim is the name of this tape that we started using. The tape is made in Switzerland, and it’s an air barrier tape. What we do is apply it down here at the bottom where the door sill is going to go down. Along the wall, we stick to the concrete here and up onto the shear panel itself. That seals that entire joint. Compared to a 2×4 plate that sits right on the concrete, the tape eliminates that air flow that normally occurs between the bottom plate and the concrete.
Application
Not only does this tape cover that entire joint, but it’s also very easy to use. The tape is made with two tabs that you can pull up, which makes installation very easier. You peel that off and stick it to the concrete. You can see that it sticks very well. Once we complete the application, we coat this with cement, and then that completes the seal. The tape has a fiber in here that helps the cement adhere when we apply the final cement coat.
Spray Cell Foam
We’re always looking for better ways to improve what we build, and this is one of those ways. We’re excited about using it to help keep that air infiltration out of the house. Air transfer is an important aspect to control when trying to seal and condition a home. You can see we have our insulators here. We also use that spray foam insulation up in most of our attics nowadays. The spray cell foam allows us to control that airflow into the house as opposed to typical batt insulation. The spray foam insulation completes the air barrier, which in turn creates a much more efficient home.
