Pouring Concrete for a New Custom Home
Good morning. It’s Bill Freeman with Freeman’s Construction. Today, we’re on a job east of Ramona. We poured about 100 yards of flatwork yesterday and wanted to show you and share the process we used from start to finish.
Using a Boom Pump
We have a boom pump which makes it much nicer to work as we do not have to drag a hose around; it reaches high so that we can get the entire over 100 hundred feet area.
Concrete and Rebar Specifications
So, they’re cutting in these four trucks that have already been laid down; we’re pouring six-inch-thick concrete with #4 rebar 18 inches on center.
How to Level Concrete
To get the concrete leveled, you have two guys, one on each side of the concrete with a board that’s hanging off pins to guide the other side. And then they have a roller tamp that they’re rolling and flooding right behind it; we’ve got Eduardo inside making sure the concrete’s clean, and you get a little splatter when it goes down.
So, they’ll slide that board down once they get to the end. You can see the end of that board, and they’ll bring it down. And then you can see all the stakes lined up. So we just come down one bay at a time until we fill it up all the way across.

Finishing the Concrete Once it Has Been Poured
So, we’ve got everything laid down. We’re just waiting for our last cleanup load, an entire truck, to finish the section. And everybody’s spread out over the slabs and doing different things on them. So, they use a trowel on the end of a pole to finish out the edges and use a broom for the finish; they’ve already completed five panels. Once the concrete pour and the broom finish have been completed, we cover it in plastic and pull the sticks out.
Wrapping Up
The concrete pour turned out beautiful. You can see where all the deep joints are cut in. We like to put those in when we’re pouring because it might be too late if you come back the following day. And if you cut it too early, the concrete spalls and chips out; this way, it comes out nice.
