Soundproofing Rooms with Putty Pads
Putty pads are one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce noise transfer in a custom home. These flexible sheets wrap tightly around electrical boxes and block sound from traveling through outlets, switches, and wiring penetrations.
When you want to soundproof bedrooms, offices, or other private areas, putty pads work exceptionally well. This blog explains how they minimize sound transmission and support the goals of a high-performance, healthy home. We also cover duct seal and SilentFX drywall, which improve sound control across shared walls and ceilings.
Why Sound Travels—and How to Block It
Anywhere air travels, sound follows. Electrical outlets, switch boxes, and ceiling fixtures can create unexpected sound pathways. That’s why sealing these areas is one of the most effective ways to control noise.
In this project, we used putty pads, which are pliable sheets that wrap around electrical boxes to dampen sound. Even though they cost around $7 per pad (which adds up across a whole house), the improvement in sound transmission class (STC) is noticeable.
Installing Putty Pads Around Outlet Boxes
We applied the putty pads to metal MC cable boxes (four-square boxes with mud rings), although they can also be used with plastic boxes. You peel and stretch the putty over the back of the outlet box, covering any gaps, especially around wiring penetrations.
To further deaden noise and prevent airflow, we used a duct seal. This soft, moldable material never hardens and forms a lasting seal around connectors and wires. If you need to change out your home wiring later, the duct seal is easy to remove and reapply.
Prioritizing Shared Walls and Sleeping Areas
This particular bedroom shares a wall with a stairwell and has a loft outside the door, so we treated the outlets facing both directions. Even the bedroom outlets were treated to prevent sound from the hallway from entering.
In areas like closets where noise transfer doesn’t matter, we skipped the extra work. However, for the back wall of the closet, which is shared with an office that has a monitor, we added putty pads to minimize noise from the computer setup next door.

Upgrading with SilentFX Drywall
SilentFX is essentially 5/8″ drywall split in two and laminated together with an acoustic glue. It improves the STC rating of any treated wall or ceiling.
We’re using SilentFX on key walls that separate bedrooms from living areas or bathrooms. It’s also GreenGuard Gold certified for indoor air quality, which supports our broader goal of building healthy custom homes.
Don't Forget About Ceilings
To soundproof the downstairs bedrooms, we used putty pads and duct seal on the ceiling fixtures, as well as on smoke detectors and light boxes. Doing so will prevent noise from upstairs bedrooms or the kitchen above.
This is another location where SilentFX drywall is an excellent fit for both ceilings and shared walls, helping preserve quiet in sleeping spaces and maintain energy efficiency in the building envelope.
Where Soundproofing Is Worth It
Some rooms don’t need sound control, but for bedrooms, home offices, and shared bathroom walls, it’s worth the effort. In this home, we treated:
- Bedroom walls adjacent to common areas
- Bathroom-to-bedroom walls
- All office walls (due to the high number of outlets and tech use)
These minor upgrades contribute to a healthier, quieter, and more enjoyable living environment, especially in high-performance homes where comfort and function go hand in hand.
