Pre-Wire Speakers for a Low EMF Home
One of the less obvious parts of building a low-EMF home is the amount of hardwiring it takes, especially in your low-voltage system. That includes internet/data lines, control wiring, and (yes) even speakers. But if the goal is to minimize or avoid WiFi and Bluetooth, you need to pre-wire speakers.
The simplest solution is to plan your whole-home audio the “old school” way: hardwired speaker runs that all return to a central hub, with wired control points placed around the house. Let’s go through how we laid out a hardwired, multi-zone speaker system during construction so you can visualize what it looks like and plan your own.
Start Where the Amplifiers Live
Every whole-home speaker system needs a central location for the equipment—mainly your amplifiers (and, depending on the setup, your audio sources and distribution gear).
In this custom home, we wanted the amplifiers out of the way. Instead of putting everything in an entertainment center, we chose a location inside a linen closet. We blocked out space for shelving, and all the speaker wiring was routed back to that point.
When you open the wall up during construction, you’ll see it clearly: multiple speaker wires all returning to the exact location. They’ll get “made up” (terminated/organized) later when the equipment is installed.
Why Pre-Wire Speakers Now?
Even if you don’t plan to install speakers immediately, pre-wiring during the build is usually less expensive than retrofitting later. Cutting drywall, fishing wires, repairing finishes—those costs add up fast. So the philosophy here is simple: pre-wire now, decide later.
Don't Forget Data: Cat6 Is Part of the Plan
Hardwired audio still needs a way to handle music selection and zone control, especially if you’re avoiding wireless connections. That’s why we ran Cat6 lines along with the speaker wiring. Those Cat6 runs feed back to the low-voltage panel (our low-volt hub located in the utility closet), and also connect the control points to the amplifier location.
Cat6 gives you options for:
- Wired control screens/panels
- Networked audio equipment (without needing WiFi)
- Future upgrades as systems evolve
Add Wired Control Points With LCD Screens
Instead of relying on a phone over Bluetooth, we planned dedicated control locations around the home. On one wall in the loft, we ran Cat6 to a spot where an LCD control screen will be installed. This control point is designed to manage:
- What’s playing (channels/sources)
- Which zones are active
- Volume/selection by area
We also added another wired control point in a bathroom, which is excellent if you want to control audio while getting ready or listening to a podcast in the shower.
These control screens all run back to the exact amplifier hub location in the linen closet—so everything stays centralized, clean, and serviceable.

The Loft Entertainment Area
The loft is where the entertainment center will sit, so we wanted flexibility—especially if the setup changes later (a wall-mounted TV, a console below, equipment upgrades, etc.).
This is where the Smurf tube comes in. We installed an orange Smurf tube (flex conduit) that runs from the entertainment center area back toward the system wiring path. It lets you pull new cables later without having to open drywall. Think of the Smurf tube like a future-proof “tunnel” that saves you from regret.
What Speaker Pre-Wiring Looks Like in the Ceiling
The power of a wired system is its ability to split the home into zones and play different audio in different areas.
Depending on the equipment you buy, you might run…
- One playlist upstairs, something different downstairs
- Separate audio on porches
- Independent control in bathrooms, bedrooms, and living spaces
The home wiring layout doesn’t lock you into one setup. It ensures all speaker locations route back to the amplifier hub so you can configure zones later.
Downstairs Example: Smaller Area, Same Concept
Downstairs in this low-EMF home, the central area is smaller, so we pre-wired two speakers in the ceiling and centered them between the can lights to evenly cover the space.
We also added another Cat6 run at a wall location for a second LCD control panel—again allowing zone and source control from that spot.
Bathroom Audio
Bathrooms are one of those “you either love it, or you didn’t plan for it” features.
In the primary bathroom, we added:
- A Cat6 location for another LCD control screen
- Two pre-wired ceiling speakers (we chose placement near—but not directly above—the shower)
If you did want a speaker directly over the shower, you could do that too, but we kept ours slightly away as a preference.
Where We Pre-Wired Speakers in This House
Here’s a quick overview of the rooms we pre-wired so we have options later:
- Main living area
- Primary bathroom
- Primary bedroom
- Loft area
- Secondary bedroom
- Secondary bathroom
- Office
- Additional loft / upstairs area
You don’t have to hook up every room right away. What matters is having the wiring there so you can selectively connect zones over time.
Extra Future-Proofing: Smurf Tube to the Crawl Space
One of the smartest moves we made was adding another
Smurf tube pathway that runs:
- Down through the floor system
- Down the first-floor walls
- Into the crawl space
Why? Because this house may get an addition someday. With this conduit path already in place, you can run new cables from an addition under the house to the amplifier location without cutting drywall.
If you’re building a custom home, adding one or two extra Smurf tubes to your central low-voltage/audio hub is one of the cheapest “future wins” you can buy.
The Low EMF Reality
Here’s the big catch when you want low EMF and avoid WiFi/Bluetooth:
Your phone can’t act as the “easy” wireless source anymore.
You can still use a plug-in jack to physically connect a phone as an audio source. Those jack locations can be placed around the house similarly to the LCD control screens. But the bigger point is that you need to think through how you’ll source music.
A key question to ask early is: “Can the app you use stream online (through a hardwired connection)?” If the content can be streamed online, you’re usually in good shape. If not, you’ll need to plan an alternate source that works with a wired system.

If you’re planning a low-EMF home, whole-home audio needs to be part of the low-voltage conversation from day one. Hardwiring speakers, running Cat6, placing wired LCD control points, and adding a Smurf tube for flexibility are all pieces of the same strategy:
Build it right while the walls are open, so you won’t pay for it twice later.
