PoE Doorbell Camera: A Smart Option for Wired Homes

If you’re looking for a smart PoE doorbell camera that works especially well in a newly constructed home, the Reolink Video Doorbell PoE is a solid option. It gives you video monitoring, two-way audio, and a doorbell chime in one package, while also offering the reliability of a wired connection.

What the Reolink Video Doorbell PoE Does

A PoE doorbell camera is designed to do more than ring when someone arrives at the front door. It lets you see who is outside, talk with them through the built-in audio feature, and hear the chime inside the house.

What we have is the Reolink Video Doorbell PoE, item number D340P, shown in white. There is also a black version available, although it still comes with a white chime.

The included indoor chime plugs directly into a wall outlet and is easy to operate. You can adjust the sound settings, choose different chime options, and manage the basic controls directly on the unit.

PoE Wiring and Connection

One key benefit of this product is its use of PoE (Power over Ethernet). That means both power and data can be delivered over a single Ethernet cable.

The back of the doorbell has a PoE port where your cable plugs in. In a custom home setup, the preferred method is to run a dedicated Cat6 cable from the structured media panel directly to the doorbell location. A Cat5 cable can also work, but Cat6 is a great choice for a new build because it gives you a clean, hardwired connection.

In this home, the Cat6 cable is run specifically to the doorbell location, and a small service loop is left behind the unit so extra cable is available for installation or future service.

Mounting Bracket and Angle Bracket Options

The Reolink doorbell uses a mounting bracket that allows the unit to snap securely into place. It also comes with an angled bracket option, which helps improve the camera’s viewing angle.

That can be especially useful when the front entry layout requires the camera to point slightly off to one side instead of straight out.

Using Existing Doorbell Wiring

Another nice feature is that this PoE doorbell camera can also be tied into existing traditional doorbell wiring. Reolink includes an adapter that lets you connect the new doorbell to your existing setup.

However, there is one important tradeoff. In that type of installation, the doorbell has to run on Wi-Fi. For many homeowners, that may be perfectly fine, but for anyone building a low-EMF home, that may not be the ideal approach.

Why PoE Is Better for Low-EMF Homes

If your goal is to reduce wireless exposure in the home, a wired PoE setup is the better option. Running a dedicated Cat6 line keeps the doorbell hardwired rather than relying on Wi-Fi.

That makes this a more attractive choice for homeowners who are intentionally designing a low-EMF environment and want to avoid unnecessary wireless devices whenever possible.

Patch Cable Included

The Reolink Video Doorbell PoE also comes with a short patch cable, which can be useful in certain installation situations. But in a new custom home or major remodel, the better long-term solution is usually to run a full Cat6 cable from the structured media panel directly to the doorbell.

That gives you a cleaner and more professional installation.

Air Sealing Around the Doorbell Wiring

One important installation detail in this project is maintaining the home’s air seal around the cable penetration.

The Cat6 wiring is routed through zip sheathing, and a duct seal is used around the cable entry point. This pliable material helps keep the cable penetration sealed, preventing air from leaking into the wall cavity.

The same sealing method is also used inside the exterior box to help preserve the integrity of the building envelope.

Structured Media Panel Setup

All of the doorbell wiring runs back to the home’s structured media panel. This is where the Cat6 cable terminates and where the supporting equipment is housed.

In this type of setup, the structured media panel serves as the central hub for networking and low-voltage connections in the home.

Reolink PoE Switch: RLA-PS1

Inside the structured media panel, the doorbell is powered by a Reolink PoE switch. In this case, the switch shown is the Reolink RLA-PS1.

This switch features eight PoE ports, two uplink ports, and a grounding screw on the back. It powers the doorbell via the Ethernet cable while also providing network connectivity.

For homes with multiple cameras or other PoE devices, a switch like the Reolink RLA-PS1 can be a very practical part of the overall smart home system.
