Propane & Natural Gas Leak Detection: A Macurco GD2A Walkthrough
If you’ve ever heard of a home blowing up, a common cause is a gas leak—propane (LP) or natural—that reaches an ignition point. That’s precisely what we’re trying to prevent.
In this walkthrough, we’re looking at a simple upgrade that can dramatically improve home fire safety: installing gas detectors that tie directly into your low-voltage security alarm system. If you have any appliances that run on propane or natural gas, this feature is worth adding to ensure your custom home is safe.
The Detector We Used: Macurco GD2A
The device we’re installing is the Macurco GD2A. It’s a gas leak detection monitor designed to connect to your low-voltage security alarm panel, making it inexpensive to run and easy to integrate into an existing alarm system.
When it detects gas, it can trigger your home’s siren and also notify your security monitoring company, so you’re alerted even if you’re not home.
The Most Important Part: Where You Place a Gas Leak Detector
Placement matters because propane and natural gas behave differently.
Propane is heavier than air, so it sinks and collects at the floor. Natural gas is lighter than air, so it rises and collects higher up. That means if you’re protecting propane appliances, you generally want the detector installed lower. If you’re safeguarding natural gas appliances, you’d typically place them higher on the wall.
This custom home is running on propane, so everything you’ll see here is positioned with that “propane sinks” rule in mind.
Protecting the Range: Using the Crawlspace Airflow to Our Advantage
In the kitchen, the range runs off propane. The home also has a conditioned crawl space, like a short basement. It’s designed to create helpful airflow patterns.
There’s a crawlspace fan that runs continuously, creating negative pressure, pulling air through the crawlspace, and exhausting it outside. There’s also a duct with a barometric damper. As the fan creates negative pressure, the damper opens, allowing air to move through the system.
Because propane sinks, we placed the alarm wiring and detector at a strategic spot in the crawlspace near that pathway. The thinking is simple: if propane leaks at the range, the gas drops low, and the home’s negative-pressure airflow draws it toward the crawlspace pathways where the detector is waiting.
If the alarm senses propane there, it triggers the system and sends an alert.
Covering the Laundry: Dryer Gas Line Protection
This house also offers a propane dryer, and there’s a gas supply line in the laundry closet. Here, the goal was to place the detector close enough to the dryer area to catch a leak quickly, but not in a spot where it would get bumped, vacuumed into, or knocked off during everyday life.
That’s why the gas leak detector was placed near the end of the hallway, by the door casing. It’s still close to the dryer gas connection, but more protected. A low-voltage cut-in box makes the installation clean once trim work is finalized.

Redundancy Matters: A Second Crawlspace Detector Near the Fan
Even with the range and laundry areas covered, we added another detector in the crawlspace near the fan. Since the fan is continuously pulling air toward that corner and propane is sinking, placing a detector there serves as a backup net.
If gas doesn’t trigger the first detector for any reason, this one is positioned where air is being drawn and concentrated. It’s a smart way to build redundancy into the system without adding high cost or complexity.
Utility Closet: Tankless Water Heater Protection
This home doesn’t have a gas furnace because it uses mini splits, so we don’t have combustion equipment there to worry about. But it does have a tankless water heater in the utility closet, fed by a one-inch rigid propane gas line.
Because propane sinks, we placed the alarm as low as possible in the closet. Waterproofing details required it to be slightly higher than the absolute lowest point, but the intent stayed the same: detect propane where it will collect.
The Alarm Panel: Levitron
All of these gas detectors run back to the Levitron security alarm panel, where the safety wiring terminates. That means propane detection becomes part of the broader home safety ecosystem—alongside other devices tied into the alarm system.
Why This Upgrade Is Worth It
Most custom homes are “alarmed” for smoke and CO, but not for propane or natural gas. Typically, people rely on smell, and that’s not always fast—or safe.
Tying a Macurco GD2A into your security system gives you earlier warning, better coverage, and the ability to be notified even when you’re away. It’s one of those upgrades that isn’t flashy, but it can prevent a truly catastrophic event.
