Installing Simpson Strong-Tie Post & Beam Hardware

Simpson Strong-Tie Outdoor Accents

Today, we’ll walk you through this custom home under construction in Middleton, Idaho. We’ll highlight the progress made so far, including home framing and the standing of some big walls. Let’s get started.

Hardware Details: Screws and Washers

This decorative hardware came from Simpson Strong-Tie’s Outdoor Accents collection. The structural screw is an SDWS2312DBBRC12. The “312” refers to the 3½-inch length.

They also make 5½-inch and 2-inch screws. The 3½-inch and 5½-inch screws are structural, while the 2-inch screws have lower rated loads.

Always check the specs to ensure you’re using the correct screw for your material.

The washer we’re using is the STN22-R8, which comes in packs of eight or 24. It features a rim on the back to guide it into the bracket hole, ensuring a snug fit.

Installing Simpson Strong-Tie Outdoor Accents Hardware

To install, place the washer into the bracket hole and align it. Then, position the screw in the washer and drive it in. Pre-drilling is typically unnecessary unless the wood shows signs of splitting. Installation is quick and straightforward.

As mentioned, the hardware we’re using is Simpson’s APV-L6 from their Outdoor Accents line, designed for six-by posts. They also make a smaller version for four-by posts. The APV-L refers to the L bracket, while a T bracket is available for other applications.

Using Clamps and Levels for Precision

We use a clamp to hold the decorative connector in place while aligning it with the top of the post and ensuring proper spacing. After clamping, we use a level to check alignment. We make adjustments with a small wood block if needed to ensure it’s perfectly positioned.

Securing Posts and Beams

At the intersection of the post and beam, the beam is notched an inch to fit the post snugly. Simpson Outdoor Accent hardware secures the connection, with an L bracket installed on both sides for stability.
