Installing Owens Corning Shingles
Hey everyone, this is Brandon with Freeman’s Construction. I’m on the roof of this custom home we’re doing in Ramona, California. I want to talk to you about installing Owens Corning shingles.
We’re using the Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration Max shingles on this custom home. This shingle is about twice as thick as the traditional shingle, giving it a lot more texture and body to look like a conventional shake roof.
Why Are We Installing Owens Corning Duration Shingles?
We’re here in one of the valleys, and the roofers use valley metal to keep the lines nice and clean on this home. We already have the board and batt siding in all the straight lines, so it goes with the look we’re going for. But one of the details that I wanted to show you is that when you start getting in a valley here, you have shingle on top of shingle on top of a shingle.
With these thicker roof shingles, you can run into a big hump when waterproofing the roof. As you can see, we have a thinner shingle of the same color running parallel to the valley metal. So you still get a nice clean line, but you don’t have this noticeable buildup on each side that will catch your eye when you’re on the ground looking up. By doing it like this, we keep that bump to a minimum and ensure it looks much cleaner.

Fascia and Shingles on Roof
I also wanted to show you how to keep a home in good condition over many years. So you can do that based on how you place the fascia on roof. When this house is getting framed, we leave about an inch of a gap between the roof sheeting and the fascia to make space for the shingles.
The second reason is that when we get water on the top, if that fascia sits right on the roof with shingles, that water will wick up eventually into the wood, which would end up rotting. So this is essential roofing information to make this custom home last. Otherwise, the entire fascia must be removed and replaced if the wood rots.
In Conclusion
Thanks for watching. I hope you learned something new about installing Owens Corning shingles. We’re making good progress here. We got the solar panels going on next, and they’ll paint the siding soon.
