How We Install a Fire Suppression System in a Custom Home

Uponor AquaSafe Fire Suppression System Installation

Hi, it’s Brian Freeman here. Today, we’re installing Uponor’s AquaSafe fire suppression system. Let’s shake up the parts and see how it works.

Using PEX Tool

We use a PEX-A, which is an expansion PEX. If you tie onto this and take off to your next connection, it operates off the freshwater system in the house. Unlike the typical orange CPVC, which is a standalone system, this setup integrates directly with the main water supply.

This type of installation is called a multi-purpose system. Every time water is used—whether flushing a toilet, running a sink, or using any other fixture—water circulates through the fire suppression lines as well. This eliminates the need to drain the system and avoids issues with stagnation. It also provides better freeze protection because PEX-A expands, whereas CPVC is brittle and can break when frozen.

The PEX connection begins at the mounting bracket, which is anchored with three screws and secured to the truss. Measurements are taken to ensure proper spacing for drywall installation, typically an inch and a half from the bottom of the truss to the bottom of the bracket.

Adding Sprinkler Adapter and Head

Next, the fire sprinkler adapter is added. It sandwiches the bracket together with small rings, sliding into place and locking tightly. The connection is so secure that a screwdriver is usually required for removal.

The sprinkler head used here is rated for 162 degrees, the same as the cover plate. During construction, a temporary protective cover is in place. Once installed, the head sits concealed against the drywall or wood ceiling. In a fire, when the temperature reaches 162 degrees, the solder joints release and the cover falls away.

At that point, the head drops down, exposing the glass bulb. When the bulb reaches 162 degrees, it breaks, allowing water to flow through the spray pattern grooves and disperse evenly around the room.

There are also other head types, such as the green Senju head, which is rated for 205 degrees. These heads use the same 162-degree cover plate but only activate once temperatures reach 205 degrees, making them suitable for higher-heat areas.
