Protect Your Bathtub From Damage Before It Happens
Hi, it’s Brian Freeman here. I want to show you how to protect your bathtub or shower during the construction phase.
Bathtubs and showers are significant investments in a custom home. Unfortunately, during construction, they’re often at risk of damage. Workers may step on them, grind their feet, or leave scratches that later require repair—or even replacement. Protecting the tub during this phase prevents unnecessary costs and ensures it remains in perfect condition.
Layering for Maximum Protection
To protect a bathtub, the best method is to start by covering the top of the tub with a sheet of plywood. This allows drywall installers and other trades to move around the tub without damaging it.
Before the plywood goes down, apply red vinyl tape around the rim of the tub. This protective layer can be peeled off cleanly before the tile installers begin their work.

Smart Sequencing to Protect Your Bathtub
The tape should always be the final layer so it doesn’t get buried under tile work, which could require cutting it out later. On top of the tub, add a half-inch EPS foam sheet, available from most home improvement stores. Cut the foam to size, place it over the tub, and tape the edges securely with red vinyl tape. This prevents debris from getting behind the foam and damaging the tub’s finish.
Finish Strong With Foam + Plywood
Once the foam is secured, place the plywood directly over it. This two-layer approach—foam plus plywood—provides maximum protection and ensures the bathtub or shower remains free from scratches and wear throughout the construction process.
