How to Prevent Subfloor Squeaks with Liquid Nails Adhesive

Clean and Squeak-Free: The Key to Better Subfloors

Hi, this is Brian Freeman. Have you ever had squeaky subfloors on the first or second floor of your custom home? This guide walks you through the tools, fasteners, and construction adhesives we use to prevent noise before it starts. And if you’re focused on building a healthy home, we’ll also show you low-VOC, Greenguard Gold certified products (like Liquid Nails) to support that goal.

The method is simple: glue it and screw it. This has been the most reliable method for eliminating subfloor squeaks in the long term and is an integral part of our process when building high-performance, chemical-free homes.

Liquid Nails for a Healthier, Quieter Floor System

This project uses standard ¾” OSB subflooring installed over 12″ on-center floor trusses. The key product is Liquid Nails Subfloor & Deck Construction Adhesive, which comes in a green tube. It’s low-VOC, bonds even wet or frozen lumber, and is rated to work between 22°F and 120°F. Best of all, it has a Greenguard Gold Certification, which is a significant advantage for anyone seeking a healthy and energy-efficient home.

We apply the Liquid Nails adhesive in an S-pattern across each floor truss before laying down the sheathing. This method provides strong adhesion and minimizes future squeaks.

Tools and Fasteners We Trust

Once the Liquid Nails glue is in place, we use a Quick Drive system by Simpson Strong-Tie, equipped with a Makita screw gun. This tool automatically feeds collated screws, making the process of securing the panels fast and efficient.

We use the Simpson Strong-Drive WSV Subfloor Screws, sized at 2″ for ¾” decking. They come in a strip format that feeds through the Quick Drive gun for continuous, effortless fastening.

The screw’s design ensures the fastener doesn’t back out over time, which is a reason why squeaks develop in floors secured only with nails, especially if glue is skipped.

A Healthier Home Starts From the Ground Up

If you want a quieter, healthier living space, eliminating subfloor squeaks should be part of your strategy for achieving this goal. Glue-and-screw systems, combined with low-VOC construction adhesives and high-quality fasteners, contribute not only to comfort but also to long-term performance and improved indoor air quality.

These are the types of thoughtful building practices that make a real difference in high-performance healthy homes, especially when combined with other materials that are chemical-free and low off-gassing.
