Why We Chose a Ductless Mini Split HVAC System

If you’re building a healthy home, one of the most important systems to consider is your ductless mini-split system and overall HVAC design. Traditional HVAC systems rely on ductwork that pulls air through return grilles and pushes conditioned air through vents throughout the house. Over time, those ducts can accumulate dust, mold, and other microorganisms that can affect indoor air quality.

For this custom home, we chose a ductless mini-split system over a traditional ducted system. The home uses a Samsung DVM S Eco system with eight mini split heads, two manifolds, and one outdoor condenser. That means the house gets efficient heating and cooling through multiple indoor units while using only one main line set going outside.

The benefit is a cleaner, more efficient HVAC layout with fewer wall penetrations, better room-by-room comfort control, and less concern about contaminants building up inside traditional ductwork.

How the Samsung DVM S Eco System Works

The Samsung DVM S Eco system allows multiple indoor mini-split heads to connect to a single outdoor condenser. In this home, we installed a five-ton system sized based on the room volumes and the heating and cooling needs of each space.

Each room has its own mini-split head, allowing the temperature to be controlled separately in different areas of the home. The system includes heads in the office, upstairs bathroom, loft, bedrooms, living area, and other key spaces to avoid hot or cold dead zones.

One important thing to understand is that this setup can heat or cool the house, but it does not heat one room while cooling another at the same time. The system must be in either heating or cooling mode. For most homes, especially two-story homes, that works well. But if you have a room that always needs cooling, like an equipment room, it may be better to put that room on a separate compressor.

Why Using a Ductless Mini Split System Makes Sense

A big reason we chose mini-splits is their impact on indoor air quality. In a traditional ducted system, ducts can accumulate dust and microbial growth over time. Those contaminants can then move through the house every time the system runs.

With mini splits, you eliminate most of that ductwork. The units still require maintenance and can develop mold if neglected, but they are much easier to access and clean than a full ducted system.

For this particular low-EMF healthy home, we also hardwired all thermostat wires and disabled Wi-Fi on the mini-split units. Most homeowners may want Wi-Fi control, but for a low-EMF build, reducing wireless signals inside the home was a priority.

We also carefully located the mini split heads and electrical wiring away from sleeping areas whenever possible. Even though the indoor heads are low amperage, the goal was to avoid unnecessary electrical exposure near beds.

Condensate Lines Were Designed to Gravity Flow

Another major part of this installation was the condensate system. Instead of using condensate pumps, which can fail over time, we designed the system so that everything gravity flows out of the house.

Each mini-split head produces condensate, and those lines are tied together through manifolds. The system uses a combination of three-quarter-inch, one-inch, and one-and-a-quarter-inch condensate piping to collect water from the eight heads and direct it outside.

The most important detail is maintaining a positive fall on every condensate line. If a line has a belly or dip, water can pool in the pipe rather than drain properly. That can create future maintenance issues, so we took the time to make sure every line sloped correctly.

Outside the house, the condensate exits through the stem wall and ties into the gutter drain system. That keeps water away from the crawl space, foundation, and exterior walls, helping the home stay dry and reducing the risk of mold.

Fewer Exterior Penetrations With One Line Set

One of the best parts of the Samsung DVM S Eco setup is that we do not need eight separate line sets going through the exterior wall. Instead, all eight heads tie together through manifolds, and only one main line set exits the house.

That makes the exterior much cleaner and reduces the number of penetrations through the building envelope. For the line set penetration, we used an Airex wall boot. This boot creates a cleaner, more durable seal around the insulated copper lines. It has a UV-resistant rubber boot and a hose clamp that tightens around the line set. Before installing the boot, the penetration can also be air sealed with a product like ZIP Liquid Flash, and steel wool can be added as an extra pest-resistant layer.

That kind of detail matters in a healthy home because every hole in the building envelope is a potential entry point for air, moisture, pests, or contaminants.

Electrical Setup for the Mini Split System

A 240-volt circuit powers the indoor mini split heads. In this home, the eight heads are on a 20-amp circuit, and each head only draws about half an amp. The inspector allowed the heads to run back to a main junction box instead of requiring a separate disconnect switch at each indoor unit.

A 50-amp breaker protects the outdoor compressor. This is a five-ton unit, and the minimum circuit ampacity must be checked to ensure the wire is sized correctly. In this case, the wire would typically be sized with larger-gauge wire, such as 6/2 or 8/2, depending on the final requirements and contractor recommendations.

Mini Splits Still Need Maintenance

Mini split systems are not maintenance-free. They should still be cleaned regularly, usually every six to twelve months. The difference is that mini-split heads are much easier to access and service than long duct runs in a traditional HVAC system.

One tradeoff is filtration. Ducted HVAC systems can be upgraded to higher-quality filters, while mini-split filters are usually more limited. For this home, we plan to use portable AirDoctor units in different rooms to provide additional air filtration.

That gives us the benefits of a ductless system while still addressing allergens, dust, and other airborne particles inside the home.

Final Thoughts

For this custom healthy home, the ductless mini split system was the right choice. The Samsung DVM S Eco delivers efficient heating and cooling, room-by-room control, fewer exterior penetrations, and less concern about dust and microbial buildup in the ductwork.

When paired with thoughtful condensate drainage, proper air sealing, low-EMF wiring choices, and separate filtration using AirDoctor units, this system supports the overall goal of building a cleaner, healthier, longer-lasting home.
