Fire Sprinkler Installation in a Custom Home

Fire Sprinkler Installation

Hi, it’s Brian Freeman here. Installing a fire sprinkler system is an essential safety feature in a custom home. There are several types of systems, and one of the most common is the orange CPVC piping, which is considered a standalone system. In this case, the home uses the Uponor AquaSafe system, which is installed with PEX-A piping. This system can even be installed by plumbers, making it more versatile and straightforward.

How It Works

The installation begins by anchoring the bracket that holds the brass T-fitting for the fire sprinklers. This T-fitting is threaded on one side and designed for one-inch PEX-A expansion fittings. It is secured with three screws into the truss for proper stability.

Once the bracket is set, the sprinkler adapter is attached. It features small threads that snap into place, holding the T in position. The sprinkler head is then installed using Teflon tape on the threads to ensure a tight seal. The head sits about an inch and a half below the truss, leaving enough clearance for drywall installation without obstructing the sprinkler.

Fire Sprinkler System

The sprinkler heads remain concealed until activated. Tabs allow the head to sit securely in the adapter, and the height can be adjusted depending on the ceiling thickness, whether drywall or wood. Even if slightly off-square, the head stays firmly in place.

Each head contains a solder joint that releases at 162 degrees. At that point, the cover plate falls away, the sprinkler drops down, and water begins to spray. Inside the head is a glass bulb that breaks at the activation temperature to release water. Some heads are rated for higher temperatures—for example, green sprinkler heads are rated at 205 degrees and are typically used in high-heat areas such as near wood stoves. These still use a 162-degree cover plate but activate later, preventing accidental discharge.

During construction, the cover plate protects the head and features adjustment indicators showing where drywall should end. For example, if drywall is five-eighths thick, it should finish about half an inch below the truss to allow proper spacing for the cover plate.

Once anchored, the piping is run to each fitting. Each bracket is labeled—“head one,” “T49,” “T50,” and so on—to help map out the system for the installer.

The Uponor AquaSafe fire suppression system is a multipurpose system tied directly to the home’s freshwater lines. Water flows through the sprinkler pipes whenever fixtures like toilets or sinks are used, which keeps water fresh and circulating. There are no dead ends, check valves, or draining requirements, simplifying long-term maintenance.

Final Thoughts

The Uponor AquaSafe system offers a reliable and efficient way to provide fire protection while integrating seamlessly into a home’s plumbing. It’s a smart option that delivers peace of mind without adding unnecessary complexity to the construction process.
