Driveway Widening: Meeting Fire Department Requirements

Driveway Widening Project

Today, we have a driveway widening project in Middleton, Idaho. We’re going from 12 feet to 20 feet. Trucks are showing up, and a skid steer is packing it in. Let me show you around.

Existing Driveway and Fire Department Requirements

Our goal is to build a 20-foot-wide driveway. It had some existing three-quarter-inch road mix on it. We’re extending that to 20 feet, as the local fire department requires for residential. If you add a secondary home (like an accessory dwelling unit) later, you need that width.

Base Material and Preparation

The crew is using GSB base material, which contains a mix of rocks up to four inches in size combined with sand. This blend provides excellent compaction and drainage properties. Unlike fully crushed rock, it includes some rounded stones, adding structural variety and strength.

Using a mini excavator, the edge of the existing driveway was cut back to create room for the extension. The new area is filled with approximately one foot of GSB material, which is then compacted with a skid steer to achieve a tight, stable surface. Additional loads of base material are delivered to finish filling along the road edge and to build the apron that connects the driveway to the main road.
