Custom Home Interior Tour
Hey, it’s Brian Freeman here. We are on a custom home interior project in Ramona, California. And we’ve taken you through this project a couple of times, but now we’re about a month away from being done. There’s been a lot of progress over the last couple of weeks, and I wanted to show you around here so you can see what’s going on.
Entryway
All right, so we’re looking at the entryway here. We were just out on the porch, and you can see that we have a nice room off to the left.
When you come in, you can see the lights up in the entryway. If you turn around, we have an open space, and you can look right out to the back door.
Office
This will be the office, which has a closet in here. This wall is 50% of the way open, so this doesn’t classify as a bedroom for septic system reasons.
Kitchen
Let’s go ahead and walk into the kitchen. We looked at this a while back, and it’s starting to come together check out all these cabinets.
The countertops have been installed on the island. This farm sink has a lip that keeps water from dripping onto the cabinets and ruining the doors below. That’s a common problem with these farm sinks. The water will travel down this radius without that lip, and then it goes down onto the cabinet underneath.
Appliances
These are the built-in freezer and refrigerator going in. If we turn around here, we can also see the beautiful range that will be awesome for cooking. There is a pot filler, which you can see where it will be by the little pipe sticking out. And then there’s your hood going all the way up.
Custom Cabinet Faces
We’ll put a cabinet face, like a door, that matches the cabinets on the appliances. So this one is for the dishwasher, and they even got the hardware to match. You can see all these hardware pulls. The same thing’s going to happen on the fridge.
Ceiling Beam
Here is the beam we looked at in the garage. It’s a false beam, but it looks structural. If you look right up top, there are Lincoln Log cuts up there that you can see, and that’s how he spliced that together. That runs the whole span of this vault from that side of the great room in the kitchen over to here.
There will be support behind the drywall to run a rafter from the beam back down to this wall when they want to do it. So that’s an option later to look just like the structural beam.
Fireplace Area
Now, we have a cabinet on the side of the fireplace, which has been set back. The workers will put another piece of wood here to let the stone wrap in and fill the gap. Then that stone will die in here so it won’t bury the style on this cabinet. So that’s designed like that intentionally.
This is the Fireplace Xtrordinair that will heat the whole house. So it’s an appliance, and it works fantastic. Stone is going all the way up to the top on this.
Bar
The bar is also an excellent feature here. Look at the cabinets they have going all the way up. They have two lights over the top for the shelving. And then you can see the wine storage here. And then you have another farm sink with the same lip as the kitchen sink to keep the water from coming down.
Pantry
This is the pantry. It’s been painted out, and you can see the wood top on the lower area; it looks good.
Powder Room
And then this is the powder room. So the quartz countertops and mirrors are set up now. The Humidistat fan is up at the top, but the toilet has to go in.
Laundry Room
We are now in the laundry room. The front loaders have been set now. In one section, we have quartz on top, and they have cabinets below. So there’s a drawer — like a pullout drawer — underneath and cabinets up above, so we have enough storage.
You can also sit on a bench when you leave the garage. And then a 14-inch Solatube is right here, which lets in quite a bit of light. So that’s what you’re seeing there.

Garage
We’re jumping out into the garage to check on the exterior doors getting painted. This is one of the sets of french doors being worked on.
Then there is that RV bay we were talking about, that’s set up for a mini split, up in the top. You can see that coming out for the condenser lines. And this is the back of that big old door we were looking at earlier.
Hallway Bathroom
This will be your hall bath when you walk in. The toilet is set, the tile is on the floor, and the baseboard is down. The door handle has this antique brass finish, which looks fantastic.
There is also a full-height linen and more storage cabinets. You can see oil-rubbed bronze knobs and pulls in the cupboards, quartz countertops, and the mirrors have some vanity lights above them.
Bathroom Cabinets
The makers used pre-finished birch inside these drawers or cabinets on the boxes. So the pre-finished birch plywood is a nice solid finish. It’s all plywood, so you don’t have any MDF that swells when it gets wet and goes bad on you.
We also have shaker doors. So a recessed shaker door is on here, an inexpensive cabinet. And then we have a five-piece drawer front, matching the cabinet door.
This is your drawer. So you can see that this is plywood, not your particle board like MDF. It’s all pre-finished inside the box. You can get these where they have dovetailed on the corner, but this one doesn’t have that.
Shower Area
I wanted to show you this niche because we talked about this linear niche in the shower. We also have a small acrylic tub shower, probably 5′ by 3’2″. But this is protected right now by tape to keep it from getting scratched up.
These shower tiles are about 2′ by 3′ tall or so. They probably cut them down a little bit, but you can see the size of the tiles going all the way up. So we have a lot fewer grout joints on these here.
Tile Edges
And what you see when you come down is the linear niche, which runs the whole five feet. So it’s a ton of space to put everything in here. If you look a little closer, this has some ridges at the back, which look like wood. Instead of doing bullnose, they did this Schluter metal.
You can see this Schluter metal on the edge of the shower. And then you can see this where they fill this space with tile. So if you pull the drywall off and float against the studs, you don’t have this piece. But if you do, if you float on top of the drywall, this pushes out half an inch, and you must fill it in. So that’s why that is done like that.
Bedroom Flooring
In one of the bedrooms, you’ll notice that all the floors are taped off. It doesn’t look as great right now, but this is all rosin paper taped down to the LVP to protect the floors. So we want to ensure that as soon as those floors go down, we protect them. But it’s going to look excellent when everything’s pulled up here.
Bedroom Closet
So we’re in another closet, and you can see how they build the stack of shelves from the MDF. And they have a double shelf and pole in some areas and a single shelf and pole in others.
All right, let’s go check out the primary bedroom. The cabinet makers are finishing painting some of the drawers and will put them back in the vanities.
Main Bathroom
The main bathroom is in progress as far as getting the tub done. So this area over here is where we showed you the freestanding tub filler going in, and the workers tiled around it. You can see how that finished out there. So it has the same tile as the other bathroom, and the tub will sit right where I stand.
This is your shower, and it’s got the big old tile pieces. These tiles are at least four feet wide and have almost just one vertical grout joint on this wall. And it’s only where the niche is at. You can see it right here. Otherwise, this is like having a slab here. And then you have a joint every two feet on the horizontal joints going all the way up.
It looks like this before the Schluter metal goes on the wall corners. The Schluter metal will go here, and you can see the gap behind this right here. That’s where another piece will fill in. This bathroom has the same niche as the other one, except this one’s about a foot or two longer.
Bathroom Wall
So right here, you can see the float. So this is what the tile sticks to. They use this float to level things. So if the walls are out of plum slightly, they will square them up when they float. And they must do an excellent job to make this tile lay real nice and tight and then meet up well with the shower enclosures. You can see a bit more of a raw edge of what that looks like.
And then the floor itself, there’s a drain sitting underneath this tub, but this is all sloped, all this mortar, down to the drain, so it’s also sloped for waterproofing. Remember the hot mop underneath? It’s sloped as well.
Closet
We’ll return here in a second to look at the vanity, but these are the built-in cabinets. That’s what those drawers are for out there in the main bedroom. And this has got a bunch of shelves over here on this side.
Vanity Area
So here’s your vanity. It’s all stain grade and has brass knobs on it. It’s a little dusty here, but the mirrors, lights, and quartz are here. As for the toilets, they’re not set yet, but they’re getting ready to do it.
One other thing I wanted to show you here is the tub filler. Look at this thing. This thing is about three feet tall, a big old thing. And that’s what will be mounted on that device down there on the floor, right by the tub.
