How to Improve Fire Safety in a Custom Home
When building a custom home, it’s essential to exceed standard code requirements, especially when it comes to fire protection and home safety. At Freeman’s Construction, we take additional steps that not only enhance the security of your home but also contribute to creating a high-performance, healthy living space. In this post, we’ll walk through two options that can help improve fire safety.
Option 1: Connect Your Smoke Detectors to the Alarm Panel
Most residential smoke detectors are wired in a series, meaning that if one alarm goes off, all alarms in the home will sound. This is required by building code and provides a good baseline level of protection. But if you want to take that protection further, there’s a more innovative solution.
In this project, we connected a wire from the alarm panel directly to the first smoke detector in the series. The smoke detectors we used are made by Gentex, a brand known for producing high-quality units that can communicate with security systems. These detectors still activate every other smoke alarm in the home when triggered—but they also send a signal back to the alarm panel.
From there, the alarm panel can send out an alert via cellular signal or landline to your monitoring company. If no one responds to the alert, the monitoring service will contact the local fire department to check on the house. This is an extra layer of safety that can be critical if you’re away from home or unable to respond to an emergency.
Even though Gentex smoke detectors cost more—typically two to three times more than standard smoke detectors—the cost is minimal when spread across the entire home. In most cases, you’re looking at a $500–$1,000 investment for peace of mind and faster emergency response.
Option 2: Tie Your Fire Sprinkler Flow Switch Into the Alarm Panel
The second strategy involves integrating your fire sprinkler system with your alarm panel. Many jurisdictions now require residential fire sprinklers, and there are different types of systems to choose from. In this home, we utilized a multi-purpose fire sprinkler system from Uponor’s AquaSAFE line, which features PEX-A piping and expansion fittings.
This system includes a flow switch, which is a critical component. When water begins flowing through the sprinkler lines, the flow switch is triggered, sending a signal to the alarm panel. This will notify your monitoring company, just like with the smoke detectors.
Once the monitoring company receives the signal and cannot confirm that it’s a false alarm, they notify the fire department. This is crucial in preventing property damage and ensuring that any issue is promptly addressed.
The fire sprinkler setup also includes a pressure-reducing valve (PRV), a water softener, and water filtration systems—essential parts of any healthy home plumbing system. We often install these in the utility closet to keep everything compact and organized.

Planning with Your Alarm Contractor
When you’re building a custom home, coordinate early with your alarm contractor. Ensure they understand that you plan to integrate both smoke detectors and a fire sprinkler flow switch with your alarm panel. These upgrades are small details during construction, but make a big difference in protecting your investment and your family.
And, as with everything we do at Freeman’s Construction, we approach these decisions with the intention of creating a safer, high-performance, healthy home—one that promotes well-being, energy efficiency, and durability.
